Company founder Rolf C. Hagen & current President & CEO Rolf Hagen Jr. |
Founded as a one man operation in Montreal in 1955, Mr. Rolf C. Hagen nurtured his small company into what is now the largest privately run pet manufacturer and distributor in the world. With management support from his two brothers Dieter and Horst, Mr. Hagen's family of companies have earned more than 55 years of experience, and now count over 1000 faithful employees. Rolf C. Hagen Inc. continues to hold its International Headquarters in Montreal today, and now operates subsidiaries in the United States, England, France, Germany and Malaysia.
Included in the manufacturing side of the company are two wholly owned plants; Hagen Industries and Hagen Pet Foods:
Hagen Industries manufactures high-quality bird cages, a full range of liquid products for use in both aquariums and ponds, and a variety of dog beds and shampoos. In addition to this, Hagen Industries also utilizes state-of-the-art packaging techniques to produce bird seeds for domestic and international markets.
Hagen Pet Foods Inc., located in Waverly, New York, manufactures high-quality foods such as Nutrience dog and cat food, Tropican bird food and Laguna pond fish food. This high-tech, controlled facility is an excellent example of Hagen’s commitment to producing the most nutritional, quality products on the market.

Hagen is not only committed to leading the pet industry in product innovation, but also in research and development. Just recently, major research stations in both the Avian and Aquatic areas have been funded:
The Hagen Avicultural Research Institute (HARI) has become a major force in the captive breeding and research into nutrition of large birds such as parrots, cockatoos and macaws to name but a few. Founded by Mark Hagen (M.Ag.), this facility has provided vast amounts of valuable research data in all aspects of captive bird husbandry. From indoor aviary design, cage construction, bird breeding to the vital elements of avian nutrition, H.A.R.I. has provided the most current data for the formulation and production of the best nutritional products for all pet cage birds.
The Hagen Aquatic Research Station (H.A.R.S) research facility was opened specifically to forward research into all aspects of fish keeping in the hobbyist environment. H.A.R.S. is fully equipped with over 100 aquariums, and the facility has already been instrumental in major toxicity studies. It provides the opportunity to continue to test and refine leading edge products in all areas of the aquarist field of interest, including nutritional requirements for all types of aquarium and pool fish.
Hagen has also been a major contributor to modernizing the University of Guelph's Veterinary College research capabilities. The Hagen AquaLab is a state-of-the-art aquatic facility that enables research on the extremely wide variety of aquatic organisms. Habitats as diverse as the Arctic Ocean and a tropical rain forest pool can be simulated by the environmentally controlled chambers and rooms in Aqualab. The Hagen Aqualab includes four major components, animal holding facilties; an ambient environment to replicate aquatic systems for experimental work under natural conditions; controlled environments to allow precise control of temperature, photperiod and salinity; a culture area with optimal conditions for rearing algae and zooplankton.
Hagen is equally dedicated to being a Green company. The new Hagen global head office building, for example, has proudly earned gold-level LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, which includes a number of unique, environmentally-friendly features:
- It's heated with a geothermal loop that includes 28 holes dug to a depth of 600 feet.
- It has insulation that's above building code and designed for a long life span.
- There's a specialized fresh-air exchange on the roof.
- The basement has "heat banks"— two concrete bunkers filled with sand that have water pumped through them during off-peak hours, so the building can be heated less expensively during peak hours on really cold days.
- Hagen planted 8,000 trees on a recently purchased 166-acre plot in a separate location.
