Ammonia (NH3 / NH4)
Ammonia is a nitrogen compound that is highly toxic to fish and is introduced into the water system through excess food and fish excretions. The more food or the greater the quantity of fish, the greater the ammonia output. In an established aquarium ammonia levels should be constantly zero as beneficial bacteria quickly converts it to nitrite. In a new aquarium or one with a recent introduction of additional fish, ammonia can increase to dangerous levels. Therefore, regular testing and the regular use of Nutrafin Cycle is essential to minimise ammonia spikes.

Feeding
This in fact is why it is important to keep feedings lean and initial stocking rates minimal in new aquarium set-ups. It does significantly help to lessen the chances of any lethal ammonia spikes. In established biologically mature aquariums more fish and more food is naturally dealt with by beneficial bacteria, such as the species found in Nutrafin Cycle. When it comes to feeding fish, the key to healthy specimens and a clean healthy aquarium is regular small feedings of food for most fish (there are exceptions). Up to 3 or 4 feedings a day are allowable. The key is to ensure there is no left over food and that all of it is consumed within a minute or two.

Biological Supplementation
Nutrafin Cycle contains a highly responsive and adaptive consortium of nitrifying bacteria that will ensure that properly set up new aquariums will not suffer fish loss as a consequence of lethal accumulations of ammonia. As effective as Nutrafin Cycle is, it is still recommended to verify using a Nutrafin Ammonia Test Kit to ensure that ammonia levels are zero as they should be most of the time.

Nutrafin Waste Control contains heterotrophic species of bacteriathat break down organic waste and help to prevent any accumulations. Should any significant quantities of organic waste be present the simultaneous addition of Nutrafin Cycle will ensure the by-production of ammonia is effectively metabolized. Cleaner aquariums free of organics are healthier environments for fish, regular additions of Nutrafin Cycle are highly beneficial to establishing a lower organic load.

Ammonia Relationship
This is another critical test that can involve immediate loss of fish. The pH level dictates the percentage of two forms of ammonia that can be present at the same time within an aquarium. The gaseous form of ammonia is the toxic form, NH3, the higher the pH value above neutral (7) the greater the toxic component. This is one major reason why the pH of replacement water should be measured prior to water changes in any aquariums that contain ammonia. A pH rise in an aquarium containing ammonia can be lethal to fish.

Logarithmic Scale
The pH scale is logarithmic, meaning a pH change of 1 unit is actually a 10 fold increase or decrease. Many fish are sensitive to pH changes and it is highly important to effect any changes gradually (not more than 0.5 per 24hours). This is truly an essential test kit.

Fish & Plant Condition
The pH value is a major factor in plant growth and health and equally important to fish condition and colouration. There is a serious visual difference in the comportment and colour of most fish when they are kept within suggested pH ranges.

Nutrafin Master Test Kit (A7860)
Comprehensive fresh & saltwater test kit lab with convenient carrying case.
  • Includes 10 tests: Ammonia (NH3/4); Nitrite (NO2); Nitrate (NO3); pH (low range & high range kits); Carbonate Hardness (KH); General Hardness (GH); Iron (Fe); Calcium (Ca); Phosphate (PO4).
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipettes; spoon; glass test tubes & caps, foam lab base, instruction booklet for each test, test use chart.
  • See individual Test Kit information for details.

Nutrafin Mini Master Test Kit (A7865)
Contains essential tests for freshwater.
  • Includes 4 tests: Ammonia (NH3/4); Nitrite (NO2); Nitrate (NO3); pH (Wide Range).
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette; glass test tubes and caps, lab base, instruction booklet for each test.
  • The basic introductory kit for all new freshwater aquariums
  • Allows monitoring of toxic biological compounds.
  • Allows monitoring of nitrate, important for frequency of water changes and implications for algae growth.
  • Verification of pH is essential in relation to ammonia toxicity as well as establishing beneficial value ranges for various fish and plants.

Nutrafin pH Test Kits (A7810 / A7812 / A7815)
  • Freshwater only & fresh and saltwater pH test kits.
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette; glass test tube and cap, lab base, instruction booklet.
  • Essential to be able to establish correct pH range required by fish, plants and corals (& other invertebrates).
  • The pH value is directly implicated in ammonia toxicity.
  • If pH values regularly fall it may be a result of deficient KH (carbonate hardness), use Nutrafin KH Test Kit and KH Booster (freshwater only) accordingly.
  • Tap water pH levels can vary, it is important to regularly check prior to water changes.
  • Recommended: Nutrafin Water Treatments: Nutrafin pH Adust Up, pH Adjust Down, KH Booster (freshwater only).

Nutafin Nitrite Test Kit (A7825)
  • Fresh & saltwater.
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette, glass test tube and cap, lab base, instruction booklet.
  • Regular testing is essential for new aquarium installations, when medicating, adding more fish and after having performed filter maintenance.
  • Persistent nitrite levels can indicate over crowded aquarium conditions, over-feeding; inadequate filtration.
  • Recommended: Biological Aquarium Supplement: Nutrafin Cycle.

Nutrafin Carbonate Hardness and General Hardness (A7830)
  • Fresh & saltwater.
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette; glass test tube and cap, lab base, instruction booklet.
  • Regular testing of carbonate hardness is recommended for all marine aquariums, especially marine reefs as most corals rapidly deplete carbonate reserves, mandatory for coral and other invertebrate growth and condition.
  • Carbonate Hardness (KH) is directly implicated in stability of pH levels in fresh and saltwater aquariums.
  • General Hardness (GH) is important for establishing and monitoring correct conditions for soft and hard water fish species.
  • Recommended: Nutrafin KH Booster; Nutrafin African Cichlid Conditioner.

Nutrafin Iron Test Kit (A7835)
  • Fresh & saltwater.
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette; glass test tube and cap, lab base, instruction booklet.
  • Regular testing is required when tap water contains iron, non-chelated iron can be toxic at 0.3mg/L and above. In marine aquariums iron levels should not be detectable, natural ocean water has an average iron concentration of 0.001mg/L.
  • Regular testing is recommended in planted aquariums, iron is an essential trace element and is rapidly depleted by plants.
  • Recommended: Nutrafin Plant Gro Iron Enriched; Nutrafin Plant Gro Fertilizer Sticks.

Nutrafin Phosphate Test Kit (A7840)
  • Fresh & saltwater.
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette; glass test tube and cap, lab base, instruction booklet.
  • Regular testing is required when tap water contains phosphate as well as in aquariums with natural decoration which can decompose and result in accumulation of phosphate.
  • Phosphate is a major nutrient for all plants, regular testing is recommended for aquariums that experience excessive algae growth.
  • Recommended: Biological Aquarium Supplement: Nutrafin Cycle; Biological Aquarium Cleaner: Nutrafin Waster Control; Fluval Lab Series Phosphate Remover.

Nutrafin Nitrate Test Kit (A7845)
  • Fresh & saltwater.
  • Full complement of test equipment: test pipette; glass test tube and cap, lab base, instruction booklet.
  • Regular testing is essential for: mature aquariums; tap water that contains nitrate; aquariums containing large species; heavily stocked aquariums, planted aquariums.
  • Persistent nitrate levels can indicate: overcrowded aquariums; tap water that contains nitrate; large organic accumulations.
