The Airedale Terrier has a stiff, wiry, close-lying outer coat and a shorter, softer undercoat. Both coats are dense, and a steel pin brush or slicker brush plus a grooming comb are among the recommended grooming tools to use on this breed's water resistant coat. This breed also benefits from "hand-stripping", a process necessary to keep the desired crispness of the dog's coat. For this procedure a stripping knife is recommended. During grooming sessions, the skin should also be checked, as the Airedale Terrier can develop eczema. In addition, the paws should also be inspected for excessive hair growth between the pads, and clipped with scissors if necessary.
