A heavy shedder, the Collie has an abundant and
strikingly beautiful double coat that comes in two
varieties: “rough” and “smooth.” The rough variety
consists of a long, straight outer coat made of stiff
hair, and a soft, tight undercoat. In the smooth variety,
the undercoat is also soft but the outer coat is
short, dense and flat. In both varieties, the outer coat
should be groomed weekly with a steel pin brush to
reduce shedding. A slicker brush should be used on
the undercoat of all Collies, except during the shedding
season, when a grooming rake is preferred. |
