As most of you might have heard on the News we here in Eastern Canada had a rather devastating Ice Storm. Most of the province of Quebec and the eastern part of Ontario were affected.
HARI was out of power for 11 days. We had a generator to run essential lights and water pump. No warm water though.
Heat was maintained in rooms due to earth sheltering of building and high insulation value in roof and walls.
Only a few (6 out of 150) cockatiels and 3 Conures died of cold stress.
Babies at HARI were moved to Mark Hagen's house down the road in Hudson, Quebec. Although Mark had no power for 13 days, he had a generator connected to two oil furnaces for heat and hot water, also two fireplaces were going all the times. Babies at HARI that were moved included 2 Hawk Headed parrots, 2 Bronze Winged Pionus, 2 Pacific Parrolets, 1 Goffin Cockatoo, and 1 Sun Conure. The birds were set up in front of the living room fireplace and were very comfortable and growing well.
A running generator is a very important part of any facility where many animals cannot easily be moved.
Damage from the ice to trees around HARI is a major negative aspect of the storm.
