Mechanical Filtration
Mechanical filtration is the first stage in any effective aquarium filtration. The term mechanical filtration refers to the removal of suspended particles and liquefied wastes in the aquarium water. These solids are generated from fish wastes, decaying organic materials, plants and excess foods; among many other sources. As waste in the water is passed over a grid or sieve, solids are stopped by the screen and kept from passing in a purely mechanical action. No conversion of wastes is attempted in mechanical filtration, although as filter media ages it will begin to support biological conversion of ammonia and nitrite.
