T5HO FAQ'S
  • Q: I currently have a freshwater aquarium decorated with rocks and keep African cichlids. My lighting consists of a single T8 fluorescent bulb strip light, I do prefer the look of the GLO T5 HO strip light units, is this high output lighting format too powerful for my aquarium as it does not contain any live plants?

A: No, it is not too powerful. GLO T5 HO Linear Fluorescent Lighting Systems are available in single bulb configurations. For excellent color enhancement of fish and a lesser amount of light output in terms of lumens, choose Power-GLO T5 HO as the bulb.

  • Q: I have a planted aquarium and would like to know what GLO T5 HO bulb would be recommended?

A: Life-GLO, a full spectrum tri-phosphor bulb will produce a very natural light and is excellent for plant growth.

  • Q: What does T5 HO mean?

A: T5 HO is an abbreviation for a linear fluorescent bulb that is 5/8in. in diameter and is a high output bulb, therefore the designation of T5 HO.

  • Q: I have a marine aquarium and utilize 10000K metal halide lighting, which GLO T5 HO would you most recommend as I would like to supplement my metal halide lighting with fluorescent?

A: We would recommend the addition of T5 HO Marine-GLO bulbs. With a strong output in the actinic range of 420nm to 460nm, not only will this spectrum be perfect for dawn and dusk simulation before your metal halides engage and disengage at the beginning and end of each day, but the strong actinic spectral component is very beneficial for corals.

  • Q: I recently purchased a 48 X 18 X 20 aquarium with a wood cabinet and canopy and wish to set up a reef to eventually contain stony corals, is T5 HO lighting recommended for these corals and if so, what GLO lighting system and bulb combination would you recommend?

A: The GLO T5 HO lighting program offers T5 HO ballast lighting systems complete with bulb mounting hardware. Being as stony corals will be kept we would recommend 3 double bulb 54W GLO T5 HO (A-1558) Electronic Ballast Lighting Systems with the following GLO T5 HO bulbs; 3 X Life-GLO; 1 X Power-GLO; 2 X Marine-GLO.

  • Q: I currently have a planted aquarium and have installed a GLO double Linear Fluorescent Lighting System with two GLO 54W T5 HO bulbs and want to make sure that I get the maximum performance from my lighting system, are there any tips you can provide?

A: In order to obtain maximum light levels from your GLO T5 HO Linear Fluorescent Lighting System place the unit on the frame of the aquarium using the integrated extension brackets, this will get the bulbs in closest proximity to the water's surface. Secondly, make sure the bulbs are wiped down with some water and a bit of vinegar if necessary to remove any potential mineral deposits. When doing this, check the integrated polished reflector and also clean it with water and vinegar should any mineral deposits be visible.

  • Q: I currently have a T8 fluorescent strip light, are your T5 HO bulbs compatible?

A: No, you must purchase a T5 HO specific lighting system.

  • Q: : I currently use VHO fluorescent bulbs on my aquarium, what is the difference versus T5 HO fluorescent other than the diameter of the bulb itself?

A: T5 HO fluorescent bulbs last approximately twice as long in terms of optimal lighting output. In addition T5 HO generates less heat and due to the smaller diameter of the bulb being 5/8ths of an inch vs. 1 1/2in for VHO, significantly more T5 HO bulbs can be installed in the same space.

  • Q: I am installing a GLO T5 HO electronic ballast and I am wondering if the addition of a GLO T5 reflector will really make a difference?

A: Yes, in fact it will make a huge difference. GLO T5 reflectors have been designed with proper dimensions to ensure optimal distances between the bulb and the inner reflective surfaces of the reflector, easily doubling the amount of light entering the aquarium.

  • Q: I've purchased fluorescent strip lights before and quite honestly I am concerned as they can easily be knocked into or off the aquarium, is there anything I can do?

A: GLO T5 HO Linear strip lights come with extension brackets that incorporate built in safety stops as well as bent over edges that will prevent most mishaps. Also supplied, there are aquarium mounting brackets that securely fasten the GLO T5 HO linear strip light to the frame or glass of the aquarium.
